Ihmis/Luonto - Human/Nature
Ihmis/Luonto -työnimellä kulkeva sarjakuvaromaani käsittelee ihmislajin mutkikasta suhdetta elonkehään sanattomana sarjakuvana toteutettavan ihmissusi-metamorfoositarinan kautta. Jättämällä sarjakuvakerronnasta pois ‘ihmisten kielen’ pyrin tavoittamaan metsässä vallitsevaa lajienvälistä yhteyttä ja kommunikaatiota sanojen tuolla puolen, sekä kokemuksia, joita on vaikea kuvailla sanoin. Samalla koetan asettaa ihmisen muiden olentojen katseen kohteeksi. Sarjakuvateoksen rinnalle on kehkeytymässä myös samoja teemoja tutkiskeleva näyttely. Ihmis/Luonnon suunniteltu valmistumis- ja julkaisuajankohta on vuonna 2028.
Human/Nature is a working title for a graphic novel that explores humankind’s complicated relationship to the sphere of life through a werewolf metamorphosis story. The story is conveyed into silent comics: by leaving out the ”human language” I am hoping to describe the connection and communication that lingers between different beings in the forest and experiences that go beyond words. I also try to depict human through the eyes of the more-than-human. I am also working on an exhibition that grows and evolves from the same themes. I expect the Human/Nature to be ready and published sometime in 2028.
Luonto – Nature
Itämerensuomalaisessa perinteessä ”luonto” on ikäänkuin ihmisen toinen sielu. Se on kaksoisolento, joka voi irtaantua itsestä, mutta luonnon voi myös hukata. Luonto voi kulkea metsässä eläimen hahmossa unen aikana. Noita on kutsunut luontoa lovesta avukseen. Pohdin teoksessani kuinka ihmiskunta voisi löytää hukatun luontonsa uudelleen.
In Finno-Baltic tradition, ”nature” is like another soul of a person. It’s a shadow self or dublicate that can be detached from the body, but it can also be lost. Nature could wander in the forests in the form of an animal during sleep. A witch could call their nature for assistance from the underworld. In my project I try to find out how humankind could rediscover their lost nature.
Susi – The Wolf
Suomalaisessa kansanperinteessä esiintyvät ihmissusitarinat ovat pitkälti tuontitavaraa Keski-Euroopasta monien mutkien kautta. Kiinnostuin tarinoista, koska ne kuvaavat vahvasti sutena olemisen kokemusta ja kaiken elävän keskinäisriippuvuutta. Susi on erittäin poliittinen: erilaiset luontosuhteisiin liittyvät arvot kärjistyvät suhteessa suteen. Sutta on demonisoitu kautta aikojen, ja monissa Euroopan maissa se on hävitetty sukupuuttoon. Suomessa susi on erittäin uhanalainen.
The werewolf folklore has travelled from Central Europe to Finland via different routes. The stories caught my attention because they express the wild experience of being a wolf and being part of the reciprocal web of life. Wolf is a controversial animal, a symbol of different values related to nature. Through times wolf has been demonised widely in Europe and it has been hunted out completely in many countries. In Finland wolf is extremely endangered.
